Power of storytelling: Future-state possibilities for an ecommerce product

The product

Webgility Online is a cloud based e-commerce accounting product used by online sellers to sync their store data with their accounting software.

Challenge

Based on the user research data, it was evident that customers encountered difficulties during the onboarding process and faced challenges with certain features of the product. 

This observation motivated me to create a customer journey map, which effectively identified the specific stages where customers expressed dissatisfaction. By pinpointing these pain-points, we gained valuable insights and identified opportunities to enhance the product.

Future-state

I embraced the challenge of formulating a visionary product concept for the future, aiming to provide stakeholders and developers with compelling possibilities to consider. Instead of a mundane one-page PDF that quickly loses relevance, my goal was to generate something innovative and inspiring—a topic of conversation among stakeholders and developers.

To initiate this process, I opted for a visual narrative approach. Drawing upon the persona of a small business owner I had previously developed, I sought to visualise the user’s journey from onboarding, a few innovative features using Artificial Intelligence, and ways to enhance user engagement.

To gain an understanding of the story’s flow, I began by creating a storyboard as a starting point.

Conclusion

The utilization of this visual storytelling method was met with great enthusiasm and positive reception from stakeholders, developers, and team members alike. It proved to be highly effective in effectively conveying the desired future state vision I aimed to communicate.
